“Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee, For Thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears and my feet from falling” (Psalm 116:7, 8, KJV).
This morning, while meditating on Psalm 116, my mind drifted to Banah Inn. Because the front porch of the Banah Inn log cabin faces the eastern horizon, one is greeted each morning by dawn gently unfolding as the sun’s first rays creep over the hills—a quiet reminder of God’s mercies made new again. Lamentations 3:22, 23 reminds us that “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is Thy faithfulness.”
Yet, the beauty of the morning can slip past us when the mist of tears settles over our eyes, blurring our vision and dimming the world before us. Tears born of disappointment, unfulfilled promises, sickness, or even the untimely death of a loved one—just to name a few—can overwhelm us until despair overshadows all. Even so, there is hope. Psalm 116 tells of one who, because of the Lord’s grace, mercy, and love, was delivered and whose soul could return to a place of rest in His presence. This rest is made possible through what our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ accomplished for us on Calvary’s cross. He has indeed delivered our eyes from tears, and we can now behold the goodness of the Lord. A gentle reminder for the heart to ponder.
